열려진 마음으로 함께 호흡하는
창가에 살며시 다가와 속삭이는 은빛 비둘기를 기다리는 우리들의 고독한 마음은 날개를 달고 창공으로 훨훨 날아오르고 싶다. 암탉이 갓 나은 달걀에 묻어있던 깃털은 서서히 달걀로부터 떨어져서 길 바닥에 흐트러지다가 갑작스러운 바람에 날아올라 먼 거리를 비행한다. 그러다가, 다시 길에 떨어지기도 하고 다른 달걀위로 살포시 내려앉기도 한다… 마치 모태의 메시지를 전달하려 하듯이…
작가 조미영은 부화되지 못 할거라는 두려움으로 불확실한 일상, 고립된 개인들의 무기력함을 상징하는 무정란(無精卵)에게 열려져 있는 부활의 가능성을 ‘깃털'이라는 매체를 통한 무정란들의 호흡(숨)에서 찾고자 한다. 즉, 작가는 “인간의 본연의 진리”에 도달하는 방법으로서 그리고 개인들간의 “단절”을 극복하는 매개체로서의 “대화”를 무정란이 깃털이라는 매개체를 통한 숨 호흡을 하는 이미지로 나타내고자 한다.
순자(荀子)는 대화를 위해서는 “자신의 마음을 비우고, 한결 같이 하며, 고요하게 해야 한다”(虛壹而靜)라고 하였다.
작가 조미영은 전시회 「숨」에서 대화를 위한 숨 호흡을 위해 고요히 마음을 비우는 숨고르기, 숨의 기운을 느끼는 숨_기(氣), 조용한 생각들의 이어짐, 숨쉬는 숨결, 순환하는 숨들, 깊게 이어진 숨들, 살아숨쉬고 쉬기 위한 숨 등의 숨들을 보여준다. 더 나아가 그녀의 작품에서 알과 깃털의 전통적인 묘사는, 깃털들이 알들의 느낌이나 정신을 전달하는 것처럼 느껴질 때, 문화적 대중주의 (Cultural Populism)에서 표현의 옷을 빌려온다. 작가는 모든 개인들이 특정한 문화형태에 순응하도록 하게 강요하는 문화제국주의(Cultural imperialism) 경향에 맞서서, 예술의 본연의 기능인 인문주의(Humanism)의 예술적 표현인 문화대중주의(Cultural populism)의 발현을 통해 고독한 개인들이 단순히 예술작품을 감상하는 차원을 넘어서 이들이 함께 참여하고 숨쉬는 놀이마당을 제공하고자 한다. 이처럼, 예술의 여유를 엿볼 수 있는 전시회 「숨」은 사람들이 안과 밖, 시간과 공간에서의 대화를 통하여 만날 때 우러나오는 느낌들의 숨-호흡의 이미지를 통하여 파악할 수 있게 해준다.

Breathing together with open mind
Our isolated mind aspires to fly far into a blue sky, waiting for a silver-colored dove to gently come nearer to the window and whisper…
A feather of a hen, stuck on a fresh egg, gradually separates from the egg, wanders on the street, and makes a long distance flight because of a sudden strong wind. Then, the feather falls down on the street again, or softly comes down on another egg… as if trying to convey the message from the mother’s womb.
The artist Cho Mi Young tries to find the possibility of the rebirth and revival, open to the Unfertilized Egg symbolizing the uncertain daily life and the lethargy of the isolated individuals, from the [su:m] (breath) of the unfertilized eggs filled with fear of no hatching via the medium of the feathers. That is, she tries to represent the “conversation” which is a medium for arriving at the truth of a human being and for overcoming the severance among the individuals with the image of [su:m] of the unfertilized eggs via the help of the feathers.
According to Soon Ja (荀子), a well-known ancient Chinese scholar, in order to prepare for a conversation, “it is necessary to empty one’s mind, to make it constant, and to make it calm (虛壹而靜).”
The artist Cho Mi Young, in her exhibition [su:m], shows the [su:m]s, such as calming the breath to prepare a breath for a conversation, signs of breathing which feel the energy of the breath, a respiring breathing, circulating [su:m]s, deeply connected [su:m]s, and [su:m]s to be alive and rest. Further, the traditional portrayal of the eggs and the feathers in her works borrows the expressional clothing from Cultural Populism, when the feathers seem depicted to convey the feelings or spirits of the unfertilized eggs. As a manifestation of Humanism in the form of Cultural Populism against the current trend of Cultural Imperialism which forces all the individuals to conform to a certain cultural form, she intends to provide a “play ground” wherein the isolated individuals not only appreciate the works, but also participate and breathe therein. The exhibition [su:m] evincing a composure and reserve of an art allows people to grasp the feelings springing from people’s meetings in and out, and in time and space, via the image of [su:m] (breath).
