Feathers- Opening the Time for Contemplation

Mi Young Cho¡¯s exhibition, ¡®Feather¡¯s¡¯ brings back memories and its resonance still delicately lingers. Halfway up Mokmyok Mountain, inside a dilapidated building that weathered forty years, a warm energy gradually filled the air. Like in a dream, stepping on faint rays of moonlight, I met the painter¡¯s other self as I entered the exhibition. The pure spirituality of the painter acted upon by nature takes form and to be reborn into the feathers of a bird. The painter¡¯s strokes seem to be beyond space and time, slowly swimming and playing in water, while delivering ¡®spirit¡¯ and ¡®rhyme¡¯, in the words of Chuang Tzu(Zhuang zhou), ¡®that life and death are not two but one and the same.¡¯
A feather within the boundary of birth and death reorganizes and slowly moves. When looking at the feather, and the repetitive flow, a feeling of transience suddenly approaches us, and faced with the inner side of the painter through the feather, we can sympathize with the life reverberations of the painter. The painter tries to communicate with us through space. Our subconscious meets delicately with the author through this space, an area for communication. The painter opens the time for contemplation and with a soft voice converses about life with us. The object of the work calls to mind memories of ¡®life¡¯s transience¡¯. Old hanji(Korean paper) and worn out shirt brings back to life history and existence of life. This is not simple formality of existence of matter but finds meaning in ¡®emphasis of the innate spirit¡¯ of memory and time. Paintings paint memories. Memories are life¡¯s truthfulness, making us feel it is a communication transcending time. Mi Young Cho¡¯s works are more down to earth than extravagant. It calms rather than excites. It pursues the truth more than bringing forth sense of beauty. Is this not the true image of our paintings.
